Yogacharya Sri B.K.S. Iyengar's thorough study, understanding and mastery of Yoga are unrivalled in modern times. He was first introduced to the west by his pupil, the famous violinist, Sir Yeheudi Menuhin. Having taught in all five continents, he has won worldwide respect and recognition for his achievements and has made Yoga accessible and relevant to people everywhere, no matter what their physical or mental ability. The main emphasis is on vigour and rigour in the performance of the classical yoga postures with attention to alignment and precision. He has also pioneered the use of supports and props for the elderly or infirm or for those in the early stages of learning, to permit a gentle, beneficial and non-injurious practise.
He continues to set the standard for his teachers and students while his textbooks on Yoga have become classics. He is based at and runs the Ramamani Memorial Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India, where his daughter Smt. Geeta and son Sri Prashant Iyengar are also directors. There are over 2000 qualified Iyengar Yoga teachers in the world in over 40 countries with over 180 Iyengar Yoga Associations worldwide.

What is the IYA(UK)?
IYA (UK) provides a network of information about Iyengar Yoga and Yoga events in the United Kingdom. Many groups of members have formed "Institutes" or local groups which themselves spread information and hold events on a local scale; others remain as Individual members. All members receive a twice-yearly news letter called the Iyengar Yoga News.
IYA (UK) is responsible for maintaining standards of teaching of Iyengar yoga, and undertakes regular assessments and certification of those wishing to teach from Introductory up to Senior levels. It also co-ordinates Professional Development Days throughout the United Kingdom, to enable teachers to remain up-to-date and to help maintain the validity of their teaching certificates. In addition the Association provides insurance cover for teacher members.
An Iyengar Yoga Convention is held each year in a different place throughout the United Kingdom, during which one or more senior guest teachers from the United Kingdom or abroad take classes over a weekend. The Annual General Meeting is held each year at one of the Conventions.

The IYENGAR YOGA CERTIFICATION MARK show above is a sign of excellence, clarity and depth of understanding. In order to sue the Certification mark IYENGAR teachers have undergone rigorous training and assessment. Teachers are also required to maintain a minimum level of training and professional development to qualify for continued use of the mark.
