I wanted to say thank you in writing. You really are a brilliant yoga teacher. I have been doing yoga for years, my body has been through the wars, it's got bigger and less flexible and wonky from spinal and wrist breakages, but you correct my postures perfectly! Makes me feel young again!
I practised Iyengar yoga in India for years with a teacher who was taught by Ivengar himself and you are better! Precise, kind, perfect pace and explanations that make you feel and understand your body and postures. With a calm and happy voice and a professional friendly manner that makes it a joy to come to your classes!

I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying the yoga classes. I haven't done much yoga before so was a bit nervous about starting. I am so stiff and have left it quite late in life to start so I knew it would be very challenging! I thought everyone else would be very good and I would feel a bit awkward. But I was so wrong! Everyone is very friendly and helpful and no one seems to mind that I am a beginner and can't do things properly yet. I even feel that although I was right about it being very challenging, I am beginning to make a little bit of progress as I feel a bit less less stiff after class and in life generally. Also I am a lot less stressed and much calmer after each class which is really good!
I want to say thank you for being such a good and patient teacher. You make everyone feel that they can achieve success in each class at their own level and you always have time to help individually. It is very much appreciated and makes me want to come back each week! Once I have done the poses more often and can remember them I shall practice at home too which I think will help with my overall flexibility.

I wanted to take the opportunity of saying how wonderful your sessions are. I’ve come through huge emotional trauma and am still left with occasional low periods. The week that we focused on opening up the upper body and arm pits was so beneficial. I’ve integrated some of those poses into the daily sequence I do. But it’s the same every week; you teach with such integrity, love and commitment that it always leaves me uplifted.

Hi Ali Thank you for your wonderful class today, I'm glad I persuaded myself to come back to it! Been through quite a lot in the last while and must say that the session today affected me physically, mentally and emotionally which I guess is a good thing!

I just wanted to send a quick message to let you know that after attending three of your fantastic classes recently I moved up to London so have been unable to attend, and unfortunately wont be a regular at Halo Yoga.
I have tried three different classes in London and none get close to yours with regards to your openness, friendliness, care and attention. As a new comer to yoga you really took the time to ensure I was correctly holding the postures whilst continually motivating. It was great. I now do yoga every day before bed and attend a class in London once a week.
Thank you so much for introducing me to yoga and if down in Sussex again I will be sure to attend your brilliant class.

I just wanted to say that it is because of who you are, and the inspiration that I receive from you in your teaching approach and as a person that gave me confidence to break through a fear barrier to do a handstand today. Thank you.
Since the first time I did a headstand with you quite a while ago now, and experiencing pain in my neck afterwards, I went into the fear I realise today that I hold in this part of my body since the injury I had there two years ago. However, I had an insight following today's release through tears, that showed me how I am holding onto, and have been identifying myself as injured an unable and carrying this perception in this part of my body. I actually felt this lifting off me as we lay down to relax at the end! I have spent the day without any pain in my neck and I felt, and still feel, so buoyed up I went and bought myself a new outfit before going to work without any guilt, feeling I deserved it!
I was also very struck by how supportive the class was towards my experience and a couple of people felt able to share their own vulnerabilities they experience in yoga moves that are challenging for them. What a wonderful healing experience to be part of the yoga community in this way, held and contained by you with such love and positive belief in our abilities to move through what we need to in the process of learning yoga. Thank you for believing in me and all of us.
I still feel a bit tearful as I write this and I know this new experience will take a while to integrate, but I am hopeful for the next time that I will no longer need to avoid eye contact with you when you invite us to do headstands! with love and blessings S

I enjoyed the class so much last Wednesday. Everything you said resonated with me. Especially about fear being stored in the back. I know that is true for me, and back pain often comes when I am feeling acute anxiety....lots of this has been 'storing up' in my body for a while - if that makes sense. I felt very emotional at the class on Wednesday, but also much improved after the lesson - so thank you so much for that.
I wonder if you ever do Yoga Days/1/2 days? Just a thought - I think they would be extremely popular. I think you are a great teacher Ali. A combination of sensitivity to the orientation of your pupils, coupled with a disciplined approach to challenge and enable, which I guess is also important in order to improve practice. So thank you for your help and compassion. Coming along to your yoga classes really does make a difference in my life. AH
I'm not sure you remember me, But I'm Moa and I attended your yoga classes in Lewes during autumn 2013! I'm Swedish and the classes were for free, and I went with a couple of other students from other countries as well.
I really have to say that you made a great impact on me and I absolutely loved your classes! I had never tried yoga before but it was as if a whole new world was introduced to me, and you were very passionate, attentive and knowledged. I really came to trust you and your ability and I also improved a lot during the time I practiced yoga. I was therefore really sad to leave Lewes, and sadly I have not picked up yoga in Sweden since I came home. However, I've thought about it a lot and now I want to begin again! I feel like I need your expertise as there are so many different kinds of yoga and I really enjoyed what we did with you. I remember you said that if we should continue, we should choose Iyengar yoga. What should I look for when trying to find a good class/instructor? Are there any types of yoga similar to Iyengar?

Thank you for bringing so much light into my life this past year. Thank goodness for your yoga classes .. the kindness and compassion you've shown me has helped enormously and of course I enjoy the yoga tremendously. Because of the way you use props to extend and enable us students I often get a glimpse of just how good poses can be. Today was a good example of that with the backbends. For a few minutes when you supported me using the belt, I felt, though fleetingly, a release, and it was wonderful. It really did lift my spirits.
I struggle with anxiety and often find that the poses give me respite from this... I know what a gifted and committed teacher you are. We are all very fortunate in learning from you. AH

What a lovely morning we all had. The children really were enthused and inspired by your presentation and taster session. Could you hear the gasps of awe when you did your headstand? And the spontaneous applause?
I did the same little introductory routine as you did with the Reception classes today and they responded really well. It's a very good diagnostic tool for us too-to spot those children who find it really hard to relax and let go.

Thought you'd like to know my feedback. I started the class yesterday with such a sore lower back. The first bit of the class was really painful - actually thought I'd have to leave and felt miserable and ancient!
Guess what? Almost as soon as we started doing more poses (after the beginning where we sit cross legged) my back felt much better and honestly, by the end I was in no pain and it all felt good!! Whatever we did helped immeasurably. Wonder what the particular pose was - crossing the legs over when on my back - don't know but it worked!
Am so relieved and wanted you to know. It won't come as a surprise to you but it did to me! When I got up yesterday morning I almost felt I couldn't go to class as I was in that much pain and I felt I hadn't got the energy.
Thank you!! I did loads yesterday after I'd got home - tearing around doing a lot!

Ali Hahlo is a qualified Iyengar yoga teacher (IYA UK) and teaches a number of weekly classes in Lewes for children, teens and adults. Students follow a programme of postures which extend and align the body, open the joints, lengthen the muscles and create space in the body for better breathing and organ function. Postures are taught safely with more difficult postures gradually introduced. Classes are reasonably active but do not exhaust, rather they warm and awaken the body but calm and refresh the mind. Classes are done in bare feet and end with relaxation. Please call Ali to discuss any health problems before coming to class. Mats and equipment are available to borrow but students need to bring a blanket.
